The exact products shown below [OR similar products from the same brand] have been repeatedly tested by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (using XRF technology) and have been consistently found to be Lead-free. In our opinion the companies featured on these pages have behaved ethically and responsibly when it comes to toxicant concerns and considerations in manufacturing.
Bicycles and accessories: As you would with any purchase, please read the full product description (and product reviews) when you click through BEFORE making your purchase decision. Please also make sure the product is the correct size (modern products from these brands – products specifically made for use by children – can be trusted to be Lead-free in all sizes and only some sizes are linked below.)
Bicycles manufactured for children today *should* all be Lead-free.
With that said – below are a few selections in the bicycle category from brands I like and trust. I will be updating this page with more selections in the coming weeks (& will probably expand and create a page just for adult bikes and accessories!) I would only have Lead-related concerns with bicycles manufactured for children that were made before 2011.
Adult bicycles can legally be made with Leaded components and decorative elements, so that is something to be aware of (Leaded vinyl, Leaded leather, Leaded brass, Leaded nylon, Leaded paints and enamels, etc.) My primary functional exposure concern for Lead found in some bicycles made for adults is with handle bar materials that can be Leaded (vinyl tape wraps, soft rubber, treated leather tape wraps, etc.). Natural cork handlebar tape is a good Lead-free alternative.
