While most mattresses made today SHOULD be Lead-free, that is not always the case. (I tested Tempurpedic mattresses and found trace levels of Lead!) However, while it is rare to find Lead in new mattresses made today there are other toxicants of concern. The primary concern in newly manufactured mattresses and bedding is Antimony – either intentionally impregnated into the fabrics and stuffings (as an ingredient of flame retardants) or as a trace contaminant from the manufacturing process. To avoid Antimony [and other chemicals] in mattresses it is a good idea to look for an environmentally conscious company (ideally one with with corporate-wide sustainable business practices and a sense of civic responsibility to!) when looking for a mattress.
